Artist statement:
I am both an artist and writer. To have and to hold these two worlds has taken me a lifetime of learning. One form of expression captures my experience in texture, color, and line, and the other leads the mind to envision through language and the rhythm of word and phrase. It occurred to me recently that at the heart of both of these media, is the storyteller. I consider myself this first and foremost. Art is our way of connecting to one another and doing so joyfully, playfully, truthfully. It is a way of breaking open our hearts so that we forever lose the illusion of aloneness and of "tragic uniqueness". It is a common tongue. It is a gift I am bound to share.
Most of my stories grow over time as they are told and retold and thought through. What happened to me, what it meant to me, and how I learned from it changes over the course of time and often within the same story as I mature. It is the same with my images. I often paint the same thing over and over again. Try a new medium, a new angle. I now understand that it is because I am trying to learn the thing. To tell the truth about it as best as I can by sharing the perspective that is mine, and to do justice to that perception through the telling of it.
This, to me, is the heart of it.
I hope you find yourself in my stories, as I have found myself in yours. Namaste.
